Head of Maintenance 

Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

Location: Valle Crucis Community Park, Valle Crucis, NC

Reports to: Executive Director

About the Park: Founded in 1983, Valle Crucis Park was established by local residents to protect riverfront land along the Watauga River from development as a recreational vehicle campground. What began as 12 acres has grown into a 28-acre, year-round park offering a peaceful space for recreation, community gathering, and environmental stewardship. The Park is a private nonprofit supported primarily through donations.

Mission Statement:Valle Crucis Community Park’s mission is to provide a safe and peaceful recreation resource and gathering space for our community, preserve open space, and educate our visitors about natural resources and the importance of protecting them for future generations. 

Position Purpose: The Head of Maintenance is responsible for the overall maintenance, care, safety, and improvement of all Park grounds, facilities, and equipment. This position works closely with the Executive Director and staff to ensure the Park remains safe, welcoming, and operational for daily use and special events. The Head of Maintenance reports directly to the Executive Director and participates in regular and monthly meetings.

Required Qualifications & Expectations:

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed- Friday evening availability required during Music in the Valle summer concert season 
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and perform sustained physical labor
  • Experience in groundskeeping, facilities maintenance, or a related field preferred
  • Passion for outdoor spaces, public service, and community engagement

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

General Oversight & Administration

  • Oversee maintenance of all Park grounds, facilities, playgrounds, tools, and equipment
  • Maintain daily work logs and prepare a monthly maintenance report for the Executive Director
  • Maintain a posted work schedule for the maintenance team; deviations must be approved by the Executive Director expect in emergency situations
  • Carry a walkie-talkie during work hours to remain accessible throughout the Park
  • Maintain inventory of commonly used supplies and submit monthly resupply requests
  • Discuss anticipated repairs, equipment needs, and larger maintenance projects with the Executive Director
  • Participate in scheduled meetings and meet monthly with maintenance staff during peak season

Grounds & Outdoor Maintenance

  • Monitor and maintain paved and grass paths, lawns, gardens, memorial areas, benches and Park structures- reporting safety hazards to the Executive Director
  • Mow, weed-eat, mulch, reseed, and perform seasonal grounds maintenance with support from seasonal staff
  • Monitor riverbanks and high-use areas along the Watauga River for safety hazards and coordinate solutions with the Executive Director
  • Empty trash, recycling, and Dogi-Pots daily or as needed
  • Address erosion, overgrowth, and general wear in high-traffic areas

Equipment & Asset Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance on Park equipment for the equipment maintenance schedule
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, make arrangements for other equipment maintenance or repairs that need to be done by an external vendor
  • Make sure that all tools and equipment are stored in a secure and organized manner

Facilities & Buildings

  • Ensure bathrooms are cleaned daily year-round and more frequently during peak season; coordinate coverage during staff absences
  • Create and follow daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules and checklists for bathrooms, offices, and common areas
  • Assess pavilions daily during high-use periods and clean or maintain as needed
  • Maintain safety and security of the stage area, including weekly maintenance during Music in the Valle and winterization at season’s end
  • Conduct regular inspections of playground equipment and Park structures and coordinate repairs with the Executive Director as needed
  • Maintain organized, clean, and accessible storage areas for tools and supplies  

Events & Community Interaction

  • Assist with set-up, breakdown, and on-site maintenance support for Music in the Valle and other Park events
  • Work all Music in the Valle concerts (Friday evenings until 10:00 p.m., June-September)
  • Provide maintenance support for weddings, parties, sporting events, and other large gatherings
  • Assist with parking management during high-use weekends, holidays and special events
  • Interact professionally with visitors, donors, volunteers, and staff; serve as a positive representative of the Park
  • Be knowledgeable about Park facilities, history, programs, events, and fundraising initiatives

Seasonal Park Operations Staff

(Hiring Multiple Candidates)

Position Type: Part-Time, Seasonal (May-October)

Location: Valle Crucis Community Park, Valle Crucis, NC

Hours: 10-15 hours per week 

Schedule: Primarily weekends (Friday-Sunday) including Friday evenings for “Music in the Valle”

Compensation: Hourly

Position Summary:

The Park Operations Staff at Valle Crucis Community Park plays a vital role in ensuring a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for visitors while supporting the Park’s administrative, maintenance, and special event functions. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, interacting with the community, and contributing to the upkeep and success of a beloved nonprofit park.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Visitor Engagement & Special Events Support:

  • Primarily responsible for facilitating the parking donation initiative by educating patrons and collecting donations at the Park entrance on weekends (Memorial Day-October)
  • Be knowledgeable about Park facilities, history, current events/program offerings, Friend of the Park membership program, and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Manage overflow parking when needed to ensure safety of patrons and integrity of Park property.
  • Fill out daily checkout sheet per established procedures
  • Serve as a representative of Valle Crucis Community Park, welcoming visitors and providing information about the Park’s nonprofit status
  • Assist with special event logistics, including set-up, break-down, and event support for Music in the Valle and other community gatherings as needed
  • Support the Park office with visitor inquiries, merchandise sales, and donation processing

Administrative & Office Duties:

  • Respond to incoming calls, emails, and mail
  • Maintain office supplies and Park merchandise inventory
  • Process pavilion and event reservations and maintain the reservation calendar
  • Assist with donor relations, including sending donation acknowledgements and updating the donor database

Grounds & Facilities Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including mowing, weeding, and caring for memorial areas as needed
  • Empty trash, recycling, and Dogi-Pot stations as needed
  • Pick up litter around the Park 
  • Clean and maintain restrooms, ensuring adequate supplies are available
  • Report safety hazards to the Executive Director and/or Head of Maintenance

Other Responsibilities 

  • Monitor individuals and groups using the park to enforce Park policies.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as mowing, lifting, and setting up event spaces.
